TL;DR: A fractional CMO in India typically costs ₹60,000 to ₹1.5 lakh a month at early stage, ₹1.5 lakh to ₹4 lakh at growth stage, and ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh for near full-time ownership. The number depends on days per month, scope, and whether the CMO directs execution or only advises. A retainer far below these bands usually means shared attention.

Founders ask this in a very specific way: what is the number, in rupees, for a fractional CMO versus an agency versus a full-time hire. Here is the straight answer, and the tradeoffs the number does not show.

What does a fractional CMO cost in India, by stage?

Quick answer: There are three working bands. Early-stage oversight runs ₹60,000 to ₹1.5 lakh a month. Growth-stage, hands-on direction runs ₹1.5 lakh to ₹4 lakh a month. Near full-time strategic ownership runs ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh a month. These are monthly retainers, exclusive of GST and ad spend.

  • Early-stage, ₹60,000 to ₹1.5 lakh a month: two to three days a month of strategic direction. Oversight, not execution capacity.
  • Growth-stage, ₹1.5 lakh to ₹4 lakh a month: weekly involvement, campaign direction, and management of your team or agency.
  • Near full-time, ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh a month: strategic ownership without full-time headcount cost, sometimes blended with a small equity component.

What makes the price go up or down?

Quick answer: Four things: how many days a month the CMO gives you, how many pillars of marketing they own, whether they direct execution or personally do it, and the stage of your business. Contract length matters too, because a longer commitment is often priced lower per month.

  • Days per month. Two days and eight days are different jobs.
  • Scope. One problem (say, positioning) is cheaper than owning positioning, search, social, paid media and analytics together.
  • Direction versus execution. A fractional CMO usually directs agencies and contractors. If you also want them executing, you are buying a different, larger role.
  • Stage. A seed-stage company and a Series B company need different depth, and are priced accordingly.

How does it compare with an agency retainer?

Quick answer: An agency is usually cheaper per channel but does not own your overall strategy. Typical Indian agency retainers run ₹40,000 to ₹1.5 lakh a month for single-platform performance media (plus ad spend), ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh for content and SEO, and ₹2 lakh to ₹8 lakh or more for a full-service agency.

At the top end the numbers look similar to a fractional CMO retainer. The scope is not. An agency retainer buys execution capacity across disciplines. A fractional CMO retainer buys one senior person accountable for whether the strategy is right.

How does it compare with a full-time CMO?

Quick answer: A full-time CMO at a mid-size Indian company typically costs ₹40 lakh to over ₹1 crore a year in salary, before benefits, equity and team budget. A near full-time fractional CMO at ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh a month is roughly ₹48 lakh to ₹96 lakh a year, so at that price you should compare the two seriously rather than assume fractional is automatically cheaper.

The real difference at that price is flexibility. A fractional engagement is renegotiated on a fixed cycle, while a full-time hire comes with notice periods and severance. Below that price point, fractional is usually the clear cost win.

What does ADG Advisory charge?

Quick answer: ADG Advisory's Fractional CMO Retainer is ₹1,50,000 to ₹4,00,000 a month with a six-month minimum. Smaller brands can start with an à la carte lane at ₹10,000 to ₹27,000 a month covering one or two pillars, with a three-month minimum. Every engagement starts with a free, 8-minute Hexagram Diagnostic. Fees exclude GST.

We publish these bands because founders deserve to plan before they call. International clients can be billed in USD at equivalent rates. The full lanes are on Work With Us.

Which number actually matters?

Quick answer: The monthly fee is not the real comparison. The real comparison is what each model costs when the strategy is wrong. An agency executes the wrong brief efficiently, a full-time CMO is expensive to be wrong with, and a fractional CMO is cheaper to correct and still in the room.

Before you compare rate cards, answer one question: do you already know your strategy and need hands to execute it, or do you need someone to build and own the strategy? The first points to an agency. The second points to a fractional CMO.

Checklist: before you sign a fractional CMO contract

  • Ask exactly how many days a month you are buying, in writing.
  • Ask who does the work: the CMO, or a junior team behind them.
  • Ask for a reference from a finished engagement, not only a current client.
  • Check the exit terms. Be wary of a twelve-month lock-in before you have worked together at all.
  • Ask for a diagnostic first, so scope and fee come from evidence, not a pitch.
  • Be cautious of a retainer priced far below the bands above.

A rate card tells you what a month costs. It never tells you what a wrong month costs.
